Run, Zaccheus
I've spent a lot of time in Latin America - three years in Venezuela and
two and a half in Panama. I don't believe the theory that we have certain
rhythms and sounds programmed into our genes - the "racial / ancestral memory theory
of music", because I default to Latin rhythms and sounds and I'm a
Swedish/English mutt! This tune reflects my love of "La musica latina" and
contains equal parts Miami Sound Machine and Billo's Caracas Boys. Everybody
knows the Zaccheus story from the children's song, but reading Luke 19:1-10, it
seemed to me that the song we're familiar with doesn't get to the heart of the
exchange between Jesus and Zaccheus: being associated with Christ made this tax
collector want to rid himself of the things that separated him from a deep
relationship with the Lord.
